Kings 3, Maple Leafs 1

Jeff Carter broke a tie with 10:20 remaining as visiting Los Angeles earned its fifth consecutive victory.

Drew Doughty added a first-period goal and Kyle Clifford tacked on an empty-netter for the Kings, who haven't lost in Toronto in more than 11 years. Martin Jones continued his red-hot start to his NHL career, turning aside 38 shots.

Cody Franson's first goal of the season provided the lone offense for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped eight of their last 11. Jonathan Bernier, who was traded to the Maple Leafs by the Kings in the offseason, made 20 saves in defeat.

Doughty opened the scoring at 10:30, capitalizing on Toronto's recent penalty-killing struggles with a shot from the point that beat a screened Bernier. Jones preserved the lead later in the frame with a sensational kick save on a point-blank scoring attempt from Nikolai Kulemin.

Toronto responded on a 5-on-3 advantage at 14:30 of the middle frame as Franson fired a shot from the lower edge of the left circle that eluded Jones, ending his shutout streak at 177 minutes, 16 seconds. Toronto pressed in the third but failed to take advantage of extended pressure in the Los Angeles zone, setting the stage for Carter's go-ahead goal that beat Bernier between the pads from the right circle on a transition 2-on-1.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Kings haven't allowed a first-period goal in 17 consecutive games. ... Doughty's goal was his 200th NHL point. ... The Maple Leafs have surrendered 22 power-play goals over their last 18 games.
