Devils 2, Capitals 1

Jaromir Jagr set up both goals to grab a share of 10th place on the all-time assists list as host New Jersey sent Washington to its seventh consecutive loss (0-5-2).

Stephen Gionta and Adam Henrique scored while Cory Schneider turned aside 30 shots as the Devils beat the Capitals for the seventh time in eight meetings. Jagr's two assists tied him with former Pittsburgh teammate Mario Lemieux at 1,033 for his career.

Jason Chimera scored the lone goal for Washington, which is mired in its worst slump since an 0-6-2 skid in December 2010. Michal Neuvirth made 28 saves for the Capitals, who have scored only eight times during the slide.

Gionta put New Jersey on top just before the five-minute mark of the opening period, taking advantage of a miscue by Washington defenseman Dmitry Orlov before unleashing a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that handcuffed Neuvirth. The Devils doubled the lead during a power play at 1:45 of the second, when Henrique buried Jagr's cross-crease pass into an open net for his fourth goal in six games.

Chimera ended Washington's six-period goalless drought midway through the third as he deflected defenseman John Erskine's shot to halve the deficit with 9:50 to play. It was Chimera's eighth goal in 18 games versus New Jersey, but the Capitals were unable to get the equalizer against Schneider, who improved to 4-0-2 in his last six starts.
