Red Wings 2, Oilers 1 (SO)

Tomas Tatar scored the lone goal in the third round of the shootout to lift host Detroit to its sixth straight victory over Edmonton.

Tatar also set up Riley Sheahan's first-period goal as the Red Wings won for only the second time in six games (2-3-1) and improved to 13-0-1 in their last 14 meetings against the Oilers. Jimmy Howard made 21 saves and denied all three attempts in the bonus format to win his 10th consecutive start against Edmonton.

Ryan Smyth scored in the third period for the Oilers, who fell to 1-1-1 on a four-game road trip that concludes Sunday at Carolina. Viktor Fasth turned aside 22 shots in his second start since Nov. 18.

The Red Wings, who managed a combined one goal in their past two games, broke the scoreless deadlock with 6:07 left in the opening period. Tatar skated behind the net before turning and sliding a pass to Sheahan, who shoveled it home for his fifth goal.

Edmonton netted the equalizer 8:43 into the third period, capitalizing on a brutal turnover by defenseman Brendan Smith. A clearing attempt by Smith was intercepted by Smyth in the right circle and his quick wrist shot zipped past Howard's flailing glove.
