Mikkel Boedker scored in the first round of the shootout and Thomas Greiss stopped all three attempts by New Jersey as visiting Phoenix improved to 9-3-1 in its last 13 games.
After Greiss (26 saves) used a poke check to deny Damien Brunner, Boedker breezed in and backhanded the puck over the extended left pad of Martin Brodeur. The German netminder kept New Jersey winless in the bonus format (0-9) by making a right pad save on Ryane Clowe in the second round and extending his left pad to thwart Patrik Elias.
Fourth-liner Kyle Chipchura and defenseman Chris Summers each collected a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who moved five points ahead of both Dallas and Vancouver for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Adam Henrique scored his team-leading 24th goal for the Devils, who reside four points out of a wild-card position in the East. Clowe tallied just before time expired in the second period and Brodeur finished with 25 saves.
Summers recorded his first assist of the season by setting up Chipchura for a sharp-angle shot 2:21 into the contest and doubled Phoenix's advantage with a blast from the point with 3:03 left in the second period. Defenseman Jon Merrill's centering feed caromed off Clowe and into the net with two-tenths of a second remaining in the session to trim the deficit before Henrique forged a tie midway through the third by tucking the puck inside the right post as Greiss was looking the other way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Brodeur picked up an assist on Henrique's goal, his third of the season and 45th career. With 47 career points, he is within one of Tom Barrasso (all assists) for the most among NHL goaltenders. ... Phoenix C Mike Ribeiro and D Derek Morris were healthy scratches for the second consecutive game. Coach Dave Tippett opted to play LW Lauri Korpikoski and D Connor Murphy in their place. ...
