Defenseman Sami Salo scored the deciding goal in the 13th round of the shootout as host Tampa Bay extended its point streak to 10 games.
Ryan Callahan scored twice in regulation for the Lightning while Valtteri Filppula added an assist to increase his career-best point streak to 10 games. Ben Bishop turned aside 25 shots and denied Johan Sundstrom on the final shootout try as Tampa Bay improved to 6-0-4 in the last 10 and remained two points behind Montreal for second place in the Atlantic Division.
Defenseman Matt Donovan recorded a goal and an assist while Ryan Strome also scored for the Islanders, who converted four times overall in the bonus format and three times to extend it to another round. Evgeni Nabokov made 29 saves for New York, which was without leading scorer Kyle Okposo due to a lower-body injury.
Callahan opened the scoring 29 seconds into the second period, deflecting defenseman Radko Gudas’ shot past Nabokov. Strome answered 64 ticks later, flipping a shot off Bishop’s back from the left side of the net, and Donovan moved up the slot to knock home a feed from Frans Nielsen at 9:17 to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.
The Lightning killed off 67 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play early in the third period before Callahan tied it up, going to the net to pop in the rebound of defenseman Eric Brewer's shot at 5:50. Nabokov made nine saves in the third period, including a big pad stop on Teddy Purcell, and the Islanders killed off 1:09 of a power play at the end of overtime.
