Brent Burns and Logan Couture scored less than five minutes apart in the second period as San Jose ended Los Angeles' eight-game road winning streak.
Antti Niemi turned aside 26 shots for the Sharks, who pulled within one point of Anaheim for first place in the Pacific Division. San Jose captain Joe Thornton registered his 64th assist, second in the NHL to Sidney Crosby (66).
Jordan Nolan scored for Los Angeles, which remained one win shy of matching the franchise record of 46 set in 1990-91. Martin Jones finished with 19 saves.
Los Angeles grabbed an early lead on Nolan's sixth goal of the season. Defenseman Alec Martinez wristed a shot from the left point that was touched in the slot by Jarret Stoll and tipped again by Nolan at 3:36 of the first period.
Burns forged a tie at 7:15 of the second, beating Jones with a one-timer from above the left faceoff circle just four seconds into Kings captain Dustin Brown's roughing penalty. Couture put San Jose ahead at 12:13 as he picked up a loose puck behind the net and wrapped a backhander past Jones at the left post.
