Ducks 4, Flyers 3 (SO)
Rookie William Karlsson scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout as visiting Anaheim won its third in a row.
Jakob Silfverberg used a quick snap shot to beat Steve Mason in the opening round of the bonus format, but Flyers captain Claude Giroux countered by converting a high backhander in round two. That set the stage for Karlsson, whose hard shot eluded Mason to give the Ducks (3-1-0) six out of a possible eight points on their season-opening four-game road trip.
Tim Jackman, Devante Smith-Pelly and Matt Beleskey scored in regulation while Frederik Andersen made 39 saves. Defenseman Mark Streit and Wayne Simmonds countered with power-play goals, Jakub Voracek netted a third-period tally and Mason finished with 25 saves.
Mason whiffed on a clearing attempt and the puck bounced right to Jackman, who split a pair of defenders and slid a backhand shot past the prone netminder at 12:20 of the first period to open the scoring. Smith-Pelly's deflection late in the session made it 2-0, but Streit drew the Flyers within a goal at 12:43 of the second with a one-timer from the edge of the right faceoff circle that caromed off the stick of a Ducks player and past Andersen just inside the left post.
Simmonds' fifth of the season during a power play at 17:35 drew the Flyers even, but Beleskey restored Anaheim's lead with 17 seconds left in the period, gathering a pass from captain Ryan Getzlaf alone in front and waiting for Mason to commit before beating him with a backhander. The Flyers pressed for the equalizer and were rewarded with 5:20 remaining in the third, as Voracek circled behind the net before cutting out front and lifting a high backhander past Andersen.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Ducks were 0-for-2 with the man advantage, failing to score a power-play goal for the first time this campaign. ... Andersen has won seven straight games dating back to the end of last season. ... Giroux added a pair of assists in defeat.
