Joel Ward registered his seventh career two-goal performance as visiting Washington posted its third win in four games.

Nicklas Backstrom also scored for the Capitals, who are 1-1-0 on their three-game road trip. Braden Holtby turned aside 20 shots for his 63rd career victory, moving him past Jose Theodore for seventh place on the franchise list.

Defenseman Dennis Wideman extended his goal-scoring streak to four games for the Flames, who fell to 1-1-1 on their five-game homestand. Karri Ramo made 27 saves as Calgary had its three-game point streak come to an end.

Ward opened the scoring during a power play 11:17 into the contest. After Calgary defenseman Deryk Engelland fanned on a pass attempt at the blue line, Ward pounced on the puck and beat Ramo from the top of the slot.

Wideman blasted the puck past Holtby from the blue line during a man advantage with 10 seconds left in the first period to forge a tie, but Ward received a pass on the doorstep from Michael Latta and scored on a backhander at 5:41 of the second to snap the deadlock. Backstrom doubled the lead 41 seconds into the third with a shot from above the slot that went between Flames defenseman Kris Russell's legs and past Ramo.
