Frans Nielsen and captain John Tavares scored in the shootout and Jaroslav Halak registered his 33rd career shutout as host New York extended its winning streak to four games.
Halak made 21 saves and turned aside both attempts in the bonus format to win his seventh consecutive start as the sizzling Islanders improved to 9-1-0 in their last 10. Halak notched his third shutout in his last six outings to keep New York perfect in shootouts (5-0) and tied with Pittsburgh atop the Metropolitan Division.
Nielsen netted his 37th career tally in the bonus format as New York (15-6-0) won 15 of its first 21 games for the first time in franchise history. Tavares sealed it in the third round with multiple dekes of Steve Mason before lifting a backhander into the net.
Mason was spectacular in defeat, making a season-high 46 saves as the Flyers lost for only the third time in their last 11 games (8-2-1) at Nassau Coliseum.
New York dominated from start to finish and had nine of the first 10 shots on net, but Halak came up with the biggest save by denying Sean Couturier on a short-handed breakaway in the first period. Mason continued to excel by stopping 15 shots in the middle session before withstanding a 16-shot barrage in the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Halak moved within one win of matching his career-best streak of eight straight victories set in 2012 with the St. Louis Blues. .. Flyers C R.J. Umberger had one shot on net and failed to hit the scoresheet for the 13th consecutive game. ... There was a moment of silence before the game to honor the late Pat Quinn, who was behind Philadelphia's bench for the team's NHL-record 35-game unbeaten streak in 1979-80.
