Sabres 4, Canadiens 3 (SO)
Brian Flynn tied the game late in the third period and scored the lone shootout goal in the fifth round as visiting Buffalo completed a sweep of the home-and-home series.
Flynn scored on a backhander from the slot with 5:56 remaining in the third and beat Dustin Tokarski after a forehand deke in the bonus format to give the Sabres their fifth win in six games. Chris Stewart and Zemgus Girgensons also tallied in regulation while Jhonas Enroth stopped 41 shots after posting the victory at home on Friday.
Max Pacioretty, Lars Eller and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal, which is winless in its last three games. Tokarski made 23 saves in his first home start of the season.
Stewart beat two Montreal defensemen to the puck and snapped a shot past Tokarski after a shot-block and clearance by Marcus Foligno 5:57 into the third period to give Buffalo a 2-1 edge. The Canadiens responded 94 seconds later, when Eller’s centering pass ricocheted into the net off the skate of Sabres defenseman Nikita Zadorov, and Pacioretty buried a rebound with 6:45 left to give the Canadiens their first lead of the game before Flynn knotted the contest 49 seconds afterward.
Girgensons opened the scoring 14:03 into the contest by chipping a rebound over Tokarski. Gallagher, who signed a six-year contract extension earlier in the day, scored a goal at 7:51 of the second period that required a lengthy video review as his wrist shot from the slot hit the post and barely crossed the line before deflecting back into play off the butt end of Enroth’s stick.
