Hurricanes 3, Avalanche 2 (SO)
Swedes Victor Rask and Elias Lindholm scored in the shootout as host Carolina edged Colorado.
Rask led off the bonus format by slipping a backhander past Calvin Pickard and, after Anton Khudobin (28 saves) was successful on a poke-check against Nathan MacKinnon, Lindholm backhanded the puck under the crossbar. Khudobin then denied Matt Duchene to secure his third straight win after beginning the season 0-8-2.
Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer tallied in regulation for the Hurricanes, who have won four of six. Duchene and John Mitchell scored third-period goals and Pickard stopped 44 shots for the Avalanche, who fell to 0-1-1 on their five-game road trip.
Carolina opened the scoring with 5:55 remaining in the first period as Staal carried down the right wing before cutting to the top of the slot and dishing the puck to defenseman Ryan Murphy, who fed it back to Staal between the hash marks for his first of the season. Dwyer doubled the lead at 6:03 of the second with a wrist shot from the top of the slot.
Duchene halved the deficit 25 seconds into the third, when he chipped a bouncing puck inside the left post from the right side of the crease. Mitchell forged a 2-2 tie midway through the period, racing down the right wing before firing the puck under Khudobin from the faceoff dot.
