Ryan Callahan scored in regulation and netted the decisive goal in the third round of the shootout as Tampa Bay extended its home winning streak to seven games.
Ben Bishop turned aside 40 shots, including 19 in the second period and five in overtime, before denying Alex Tanguay in the third round of the bonus format to end the contest. Defenseman Anton Stralman recorded a goal and an assist while Nikita Kucherov also scored in the first round of the shootout.
Nathan MacKinnon tied the game in the final seconds of regulation and assisted on Ryan O’Reilly’s second-period goal for the Avalanche, who are 1-1-2 on their five-game road trip. Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves before Callahan deked and slid the puck inside the right post in the bonus format.
Valtteri Filppula worked the puck back to Stralman just above the right faceoff circle for a low shot that went between Varlamov’s pads 4:08 into the third period for a 2-1 lead. Bishop made several big stops in the final minutes before the puck squirted through the crease to MacKinnon, who was able to knock it inside the left post with 6.8 seconds remaining.
Stralman’s stretch pass during a power play set up a 2-on-1 rush during which Alex Killorn dished the puck to Callahan, who beat Varlamov from the right circle 1:58 into the contest. MacKinnon corralled the puck after some strong forechecking and fed O’Reilly in front to even the contest 51 seconds into the second session.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Callahan has recorded a goal in three of his last four games. …Tampa Bay D Matt Carle was scratched due to an undisclosed injury after playing in 347 consecutive regular-season games, a streak that dated back to the 2009-10 season with Philadelphia.. … O’Reilly’s goal was his first in nine games since scoring on Dec. 31 against Philadelphia. … MacKinnon had gone scoreless in the first three games on Colorado's five-game road trip (1-1-2).
