Avalanche 3, Bruins 2 (SO)
Nathan MacKinnon converted in the first round of the shootout after Ryan O'Reilly forced overtime by scoring with 1:45 left in the third period as Colorado cooled off visiting Boston.
Jarome Iginla scored in the final second of the opening period as the Avalanche registered their second win in six games (2-2-2). Semyon Varlamov made 22 saves and clinched the victory by stopping Patrice Bergeron on Boston's final attempt in the bonus format.
Defenseman Torey Krug and Brad Marchand scored for the Bruins, who suffered their second loss in eight contests (6-1-1). Tuukka Rask turned aside 34 shots for Boston, which has earned points in 11 of its last 12 games (7-1-4).
With time winding down in the first period, Alex Tanguay threw a shot on net from the left-wing boards that was kicked out by Rask, but Iginla knocked in the rebound from the bottom of the faceoff circle with fourth-tenths of a second remaining. It was eerily similar to the first matchup between the teams this season, when Colorado's Daniel Briere scored the game-winner with less than a second to play.
Boston tied it 6:18 into the second as rookie David Pastrnak's shot ricocheted to Krug, who buried it from below the left circle. Marchand, back in the lineup after a two-game suspension, put the Bruins ahead at 4:47 of the third by taking a pass from David Krejci and wristing the puck past Varlamov from the left circle, but O'Reilly scored off a scramble in front to force overtime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Iginla - who played for Boston last season - registered his 574th career goal, moving past Mike Bossy and into sole possession of 20th place on the all-time list. ... Krejci notched the 400th point of his career with the assist on Marchand's team-leading 13th goal. ... Boston snuffed out all five power plays by Colorado, including a pair of 5-on-3s, and has killed off 38-of-40 penalties this month.
