Hurricanes 3, Flyers 2 (SO)
Nathan Gerbe and Chris Terry scored in the first two rounds of the shootout as host Carolina defeated Philadelphia for the seventh time in eight meetings.
Gerbe's quick wrist shot gave the Hurricanes the early edge in the bonus format and Terry doubled the advantage in the second round, backhanding the puck past Ray Emery (24 saves) and under the crossbar. Nick Cousins answered with a backhand shot of his own on the Flyers' second attempt, but Cam Ward denied captain Claude Giroux at the left post to seal the win.
Jordan Staal collected a goal and an assist while Elias Lindholm also scored for Carolina, which snapped a three-game skid (0-2-1) by posting its third victory in four contests against the Flyers this season. Ward finished with 21 saves in the win.
Sean Couturier settled a bouncing puck and backhanded it between the pads of Ward with 1:50 remaining in the third period for his career-high 14th goal, forging a 2-2 tie. Couturier also had an assist on Michael Raffl's power-play goal and defenseman Michael Del Zotto set up a pair of tallies for Philadelphia, which finished 10-20-11 on the road this season.
Staal's sharp wrist shot from the left faceoff circle was denied by Emery, but Lindholm one-timed the rebound into the gaping net from the right circle at the 11-minute mark of the first period to open the scoring. Staal doubled the advantage 3:27 into the second, forcing a turnover by Flyers defenseman Nicklas Grossmann and blasting a shot past Emery for his first goal in 19 games before Couturier's shot deflected off the shaft of the stick of Raffl and past Ward midway through the session to halve the deficit.
