Coyotes 4, Maple Leafs 3
TORONTO -- Coyotes rookie center Max Domi scored a goal to help beat his father's old team as Arizona edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 Monday night at Air Canada Centre.
Domi, selected 12th overall by the Coyotes in the 2013 draft, has 10 points in his first season. His father, Tie Domi, was drafted by the Maple Leafs and played more than 10 seasons in Toronto.
The Coyotes (5-3-1) earned their second victory in a row, with goalie Mike Smith making 24 saves. They are 4-1-1 on the road.
The Leafs (1-5-2) have yet to win at home in three tries. Toronto goalie James Reimer stopped 20 shots.
Center Kyle Chipchura scored in the third period to give the Coyotes a 4-1 lead, but the Leafs rallied with goals by left winger James Van Riemsdyk and defenseman Morgan Rielly to pull within one.
By the time Rielly scored inside the final three minutes of the game, most of the announced crowd of 18,944 had vacated the building.
There were few opportunities until Rielly's goal for the crowd to cheer for the Leafs. At one point, one person shouted, "Let's go Blue Jays," a reference to the Toronto Blue Jays, whose dramatic playoff run ended a few days before in the American League Championship Series against the Kansas City Royals.
The Coyotes led 3-1 after the first two periods on goals by Domi, right winger Shane Doan and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck.
Domi and Doan scored their goals on first-period power plays. The Coyotes had a third power-play goal in the opening period disallowed because it was determined that center Martin Hanzel tipped in the puck with a high stick.
Just 6:31 into the game, Domi scored on a snap shot from the faceoff circle.
Toronto tied the game at 13:08 of the first period. Center Shawn Matthias scored his first goal and recorded his first point as a Leaf, tipping in a rebound.
Doan, with his second of the season, gave the Coyotes the lead again less than two minutes later. Doan redirected a pass when left uncovered in front of the net.
At 7:38 of the second period, the Coyotes added to their lead on a slap shot by Dahlbeck from just inside the blue line that beat Reimer on the blocker side. Reimer, making his first start in four games, should have made the save.
