Senators 3, Jets 2 (SO)
OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators rediscovered the feeling of winning on home ice Thursday night.
Shootout goals by winger Bobby Ryan and centers Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad gave the Senators a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets at Canadian Tire Centre.
Goalie Craig Anderson made the only save of the shootout, coming out of his net to stop winger Andrew Ladd.
The win, the Senators' first at home since an Oct. 22 shootout, improved their record at Canadian Tire Centre to 2-3-2, compared to a 5-1-0 mark on the road.
Defenseman Cody Ceci and Ryan had the regulation-time goals for the Senators. The Jets' goals came from winger Andrew Ladd and defensemen Dustin Byfuglien.
Through three periods, the Jets outshot the Senators 33-28. Both Anderson and Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson provided heroics at various stages. Hutchinson stopped Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson on a clear breakaway in the first minute of overtime, and robbed Ryan from in close in the fourth minute. Anderson made big stops off center Bryan Little and center Mark Scheifele in overtime.
The Jets outshot the Senators 6-3 in the extra session.
Byfuglien set the stage a dramatic finish when he scored his fourth of the season at the 26 seconds into the third period. After stripping Karlsson of the puck at the Winnipeg blue line, Byfuglien skated down the left side and, from the top of the offensive zone circle, beat Anderson with a low slap shot to the glove side.
The Senators had built a 2-0 lead at the 12:04 mark of the second when Ryan one-timed a no-look pass by center Mika Zibanejad for his fifth goal of the season and fourth in the last five games.
Karlsson also drew an assist on the play, giving him 12 on the season and at least temporary tying him for the league lead in the category.
The Jets finally broke through on Anderson at 17:19 of the middle frame when winger Blake Wheeler won a battle against Senators defensemen Jared Cowen along the end boards, then made a behind-the-net pass to Ladd, who squeezed a sharp angle shot between Anderson and the post.
Cecil opened the scoring with a wrist shot from the point one second past the midway point of the first, after Senators center Jean-Gabriel Pageau had won a face-off deep in the Jets zone. Since he didn't move until the puck was in the back of the net, it can be assumed Hutchinson was screened for the floater.
The Jets next game is Saturday in Winnipeg against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Senators begin a two-game road trip Saturday in Carolina.
