Panthers 4, Islanders 3 (SO)

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Florida center Aleksander Barkov scored the game-winner in the fifth round of the shootout as the Panthers defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 at the BB&T Center on Friday.

Left wingers Brandon Pirri and Jussi Jokinen scored for the Panthers (9-9-4) in regulation.

Center Ryan Strome and left winger Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders (11-8-4) prior to the tie-breaking skills competition.

Right winger Jaromir Jagr, defenseman Erik Gudranson and center Vincent Trocheck had assists for Florida.

Centers Mikhail Grabovski and Frans Nielsen along with Bailey added assists for New York.

Goalie Jaroslav Halak 23 saves for the Islanders while Roberto Luongo had 25 for Florida.

Luongo moved past Glenn Hall for eighth place in all-time NHL wins with 408 while playing in his 882nd NHL game, tying him with former Florida goalie John Vanbriesbrouck for eighth in all-time games played.

Pirri opened the scoring with his fourth of the season in the first period when he collected the puck and skated into the right circle, patiently awaiting new linemates Jagr and Barkov. His shot slid along the ice and clipped the stick of Grabovski, elevating the puck over Halak's left shoulder at 8:38 for a 1-0 Florida lead. The assists went to Jagr and Gudbranson, who has recorded a point in his last three games against New York.

Jagr's helper gave him eight points in his last eight games. The 43-year-old forward also has points in five consecutive contests.

Trocheck's clever play on a faceoff led to the Panthers going up 2-0 4:42 into the second period.

He won the draw to Halak's left, pushing the puck forward and gathering it rather than sending it behind him. Trocheck then skated around the net and sent a short pass to Jokinen, who tapped it in from the left side near the crease for his sixth goal and second in three games.

The Islanders scored twice in the third period to erase Florida's lead.

Strome, just recalled on Thanksgiving, put the Islanders on the board when he beat Luongo for his second goal on the short side over the glove with a shot 5:36 into the period.

Bailey scored just over three minutes later when he held the puck, skated into the low slot and slid a shot past Luongo for his fourth goal to tie the game 2-2.
