Flyers 3, Rangers 0

NEW YORK -- Right winger Wayne Simmonds had two goals and an assist while goaltender, Steve Mason made 24 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Rangers 3-0 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Flyers center Sean Couturier also scored for the Flyers, who had not won at MSG during the regular season since the 2010-11 season.

The Flyers have won three of their last four games.

Goaltender Antti Raanta lost for the first time in five starts this season, as he allowed two goals on 34 shots.

The Rangers have lost three straight in regulation after winning 11 of 12.

The only fireworks during the first 20 minutes occurred when Rangers defenseman Dylan McIlrath crushed Flyers defenseman Nick Schultz midway through the period.

Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn fought McIlrath after the hit, which resulted in Schultz leaving the game because of an upper-body injury.

The game remained scoreless until 12:24 of the second period, when Simmonds scored his fourth of the season to put the Flyers ahead 1-0. Left winger Matt Read sprung Simmonds for a breakaway chance that ended with the puck flying past Raanta's catching glove.

Simmonds was the catalyst on the Flyers’ second goal. He drove the net and backhanded a hard shot that Raanta stopped. Rangers defenseman Keith Yandle was unable to secure the puck or Couturier, who stashed the rebound to make it 2-0 at 3:06 of the third period.

The Rangers did what they could to keep the game close. They killed a 5-on-3 power play for the Flyers that lasted 1:03 during the early part of the third period.

Raanta was pulled for an extra attacker with about 3:30 remaining. The Rangers had several quality chances and Simmonds scored his second of the game into an empty net with 49.3 seconds remaining.
