Sharks 5, Flames 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Five different skaters scored goals and goalie Martin Jones made 25 saves as the San Jose Sharks overwhelmed the Calgary Flames 5-2 on Saturday night at the SAP Center.

The Flames denied Jones' fourth shutout of the season at 9:42 of the third period when center Markus Granlund scored his first goal of the season with a wrist shot from the slot.

San Jose answered 25 seconds later when Vlasic scored his third goal of the season from in close. Calgary closed out the scoring when left winger Micheal Ferland scored his first of the season at 19:43.

San Jose doubled its first-period lead by scoring two more in the second period, both coming on a power play that has struggled to convert on home ice this season.

Calgary defenseman Deryk Engelland's roughing penalty against San Jose left winger Matt Nieto was compounded when defenseman Dennis Wideman high-sticked Sharks center Tomas Hertl to put the Flames' 30th-ranked penalty kill down two men at mid-period.

It took right winger Joel Ward just 13 seconds to convert the five-on-three when he scored his ninth goal of the season at 10:04. Ward deftly nudged the stick of Calgary defenseman TJ Brodie away to free his for a one-time strike after receiving a short pass from right winger Joe Pavelski.

San Jose then made it two in a row when left winger Patrick Marleau beat screened Calgary goalie Jonas Hiller with a wrist shot from the slot. Marleau's ninth goal of the season at 10:54 was also No. 465 of his career.

San Jose came into its 10th home game of the season with only one power-play goal in 27 attempts.

The Sharks sprinted out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as the Flames offered little in terms of resistance. San Jose outshot Calgary 11-10 during a 20-minute session that wasn't nearly as close as the narrow differential suggested.

The offense came from the two Sharks forwards who were benched for the third period on Wednesday for subpar play during a 5-2 loss to Chicago -- right winger Tommy Wingels and Hertl, a third-line center.

Wingels planted himself in the slot to redirect a Marc-Edouard Vlasic blast from the right point past Hiller at 9:03. Wingels' second goal of the season snapped a streak of 14 games without a goal.

Hertl, who assisted on the first goal, snapped an even longer drought during San Jose's next strike. Hertl found the back of the net for the first time in 20 games with a blast from the bottom of the right circle that snuck inside the near post on Hiller at 12:36.
