Avalanche 4, Senators 3
OTTAWA -- The Colorado Avalanche scored three power-play goals to snap a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night at Canadian Tire Centre.
Winger Jerome Iginla paced the Avalanche with two goals, with center Nathan MacKinnon and winger Blake Comeau adding the others.
Wingers Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman each scored on the power play for the Senators, who also had a late goal from winger Chris Neil.
Defenseman Dion Phaneuf had two assists in his first game at Canadian Tire Centre as a Senator. Defenseman Erik Karlsson also had two assists.
Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov had 26 saves while Senators goalie Andrew Hammond stopped 23 shots.
The Senators were trailing 3-2 when they pulled Hammond for an extra attacker, but the move backfired as Comeau scored an empty netter.
Neil scored off a scramble with 26 seconds left but the Senators couldn't get any closer.
The Avalanche built a 3-0 lead by the 6:64 mark of the second, with MacKinnon firing a shot over Hammond's glove off an odd-man rush during a Colorado power play and Iginla getting his second of the game with a one-timer on another man-advantage opportunity.
But the Senators battled back with a couple of power-play goals of their own to make a game of it before the intermission. First, Stone deflected home a shot by Phaneuf at the 11:55 mark for his 17th of the season, and then Hoffman one-timed a pass from Karlsson with eight seconds left in the period.
Iginla's first goal of the night was scored at 9:16 of the opening period in the second half of a double-minor to Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki. Hammond was like a target in a shooting gallery before Iginla's shot toward the open side went off the goalie's glove and dribbled just over the line.
