Sharks 2, Flames 1 (OT)

CALGARY, Alberta -- Joe Pavelski scored 19 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Brent Burns set up the goal and also scored his 24th of the season early in the first period to help the Sharks (36-23-6) bounce back from a 4-2 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.

Joe Colborne scored a power-play goal for the Flames (27-34-5) with 1:22 remaining in the third period to force overtime.

San Jose goalie Martin Jones made 47 saves to record his 33rd win over the season, while Calgary netminder Joni Ortio stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced.

The Flame's previous high shot total this season was when they took 40 during a 3-2 home win over the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 23.

On Calgary's sixth power play of the game late in the third, Jones stood his ground to turn aside a shot by Gaudreau before Colborne tipped in Giordano's point shot.

Burns gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 1:56 of the first period when his snap shot from the point through traffic found its way into the top corner, glove side behind Ortio.

Calgary outshot San Jose 11-7 in the opening frame largely due to three power plays, including a two-man advantage for 24 seconds late in the period.

Jones, who helped the Calgary Hitmen win a Western Hockey League title in 2010 to culminate a successful four-year junior career, had to be sharp to turn aside successive shots by Sam Bennett, Sean Monahan and Hamilton late in the Flames' man advantage.

Calgary continued to pour on the pressure and fired the first 10 shots on net in the second period but still wasn't able to solve Jones, who stood his ground to thwart scoring attempts by Mark Giordano, Hamilton and Johnny Gaudreau during yet another power play for the Flames.

Shortly after that man advantage expired, Ortio made his best save of the game to turn aside a snap shot by Matt Nieto, which was the first shot of the second period for the Sharks just past the 10-minute mark.

At the other end of the ice, Jones kept up his strong performance with a nice glove save to deny Bennett.

Mikael Backlund had a great chance to get the Flames on the scoreboard early in the first period, but he wasn't able to tap a loose puck in the crease behind Jones, who stopped the initial point shot off the stick of Dougie Hamilton.

The Flames had another great chance to pull even with the Sharks just before the nine-minute mark of the third period, but Lance Bouma swatted a pass from Colborne through the crease and just wide of the opposite post.

NOTES: After suiting up for 11 consecutive games in his first season with the Flames, D Jakub Nakladal sat out Monday's contest due to an eye injury he sustained as a result of a high-stick in the second period of Calgary's 4-2 win in Pittsburgh over the Penguins on Saturday. ...
