Schwartz, Allen lead Blues to 1-0 victory

ST. LOUIS -- Center Jaden Schwartz scored the only goal early in the third period and Jake Allen got the shutout to give the St. Louis Blues a 1-0 victory Saturday night over the Los Angeles Kings.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Kings, three of which came in overtime and one in a shootout.

Schwartz, who missed the first four games of the season because of an elbow injury, scored his first goal of the year when he converted a pass from left winger Jori Lehtera 3:43 into the third period.

The Kings challenged that the play was offsides, but after video review the challenge was denied.

Allen stopped 27 Los Angeles shots to record his first shutout of the season and 12th of his career.

It was the third consecutive game, and the fifth time in their last six contests, that the Blues scored only one goal. Schwartz's goal was the first by a Blues forward in the last three games.

The Blues were able to keep the Kings from scoring through the first two periods because of Allen stopping 20 shots, and killing off four power-play chances for the Kings.

One of their penalty kills included a 5-on-3 advantage for 22 seconds by the Kings in the first period. The Blues killed off another power-play in the third period and have killed 31 of 33 power plays for their opponents this season.

Peter Budaj, who has been in goal for all of the Kings' games during the winning streak, mostly kept the Blues off the scoreboard in part because of some misses. Center Paul Stastny had two golden chances, including one on a wide-open net when he fanned on a shot, and when defenseman Joel Edmundson hit a post.

NOTES: The Blues will be without D Robert Bortuzzo for at least 10 days because of a lower-body injury suffered in Thursday night's game. The team is expected to recall a defenseman from Chicago of the AHL before playing Tuesday night against the Rangers in New York. ... After clearing waivers, Blues LW Magnus Paajarvi was assigned to Chicago. ... Blues LW Scottie Upshall was a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game. ... Scratched by the Kings were D Matt Greene, RW Teddy Purcell and C Jordan Nolan. ... The Kings are playing their first set of back-to-back games this season, making their only trip to Chicago to play the Blackhawks on Sunday night.
