Turris' late goal helps Senators survive Hurricanes
OTTAWA -- Kyle Turris scored with 3:32 left to give the Ottawa Senators their ninth one-goal victory of the season, 2-1 over the Carolina Hurricanes at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.
Craig Anderson made 32 saves and defenseman Dion Phaneuf also scored for Ottawa (13-7-1), which won its third straight. The Senators are tied for the NHL lead in one-goal victories.
Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes (8-8-4), who lost their second game in a row after winning five straight. Cam Ward made 22 saves.
Phaneuf tied the game 1-1 at 6:15 of the second period after Ottawa was pinned in its zone for most of two shifts. Senators forward Ryan Dzingel pulled up on the right wing inside the Carolina zone and hit Phaneuf with a pass in the high slot. Phaneuf wheeled around Aho and his shot, with Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk screening Ward, went in by the right post.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring at 11:24 of the first period when they executed a routine play and got a lucky bounce. After the puck was chipped by Senators defenseman Cody Ceci at the Ottawa blue line, Aho picked it up along the boards. Phaneuf came over to back up his partner and Senators forward Tom Pyatt got in good position to cover Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal going to the net.
Anderson stopped Aho's sharp-angled shot, but the rebound went in off Pyatt in front for Aho's third goal of the season.
It was the 11th straight game the Senators have given up the first goal and the 16th time in 21 games this season.
