Granlund, Horvat lift Canucks past Maple Leafs
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Markus Granlund and Bo Horvat scored in a shootout as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Saturday night.
Mitch Marner also scored for the Maple Leafs in the shootout.
Vancouver goaltender Ryan Miller sealed the win by stopping Tyler Bozak's final attempt of the shootout.
Daniel Sedin and Sven Baertschi scored in regulation for the Canucks (11-12-2). Captain Henrik Sedin also collected an assist, giving him at least one point in Vancouver's last five home games.
James van Riemsdyk and rookie Auston Matthews scored for Toronto (10-9-5).
Matthews tied the game 2-2 with just 1:56 expired in the third period.
Defenseman Martin Marincin took a shot from the blue line that went wide. Zach Hyman got the puck behind the net and passed to Matthews, who was left alone in the slot. He scored his 11th goal of the season and fifth in five games.
Miller stopped 38 shots for the Canucks while Toronto goaltender Frederik Anderson made 22 saves.
Toronto outshot Vancouver 11-4 in the third period and 7-1 in the three-on-three overtime.
The Canucks are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
The Maple Leafs, who are 2-6-5 on the road this season, have just one win in Vancouver since 2004.
The teams played a fast, end-to-end game. They had combined for 171 penalty minutes in a 6-3 Toronto win on Nov. 5. The bad blood in that game started after Toronto's Nazem Kadri left Daniel Sedin stretched out on the ice following a blindside hit.
The Canucks took a 2-1 lead into the third period after the teams exchanged goals in the second.
Baertschi put Vancouver ahead 2-0 at 2:37 of the second with his third goal in four games.
The play started in the Vancouver zone when defenseman Nikita Tryamkin picked up a loose puck and banked a pass to Alex Burrows, who was streaking into the Leafs' end. Burrows took the puck off the boards and passed into the slot, where Baertschi directed it between Andersen's pads.
The Leafs cut the lead in half at 11:30, only 14 seconds after Vancouver's Jayson Megna was sent off for goaltender interference. Bozak took a shot from the point that Miller stopped, but van Riemsdyk put in the rebound for his 11th goal of the season.
Vancouver opened the scoring at 13:03 of the first period. Defenseman Luca Sbisa fed a pass to Daniel Sedin. His shot from just inside the blue line appeared to hit Toronto's Roman Polak in the slot and fluttered past Andersen.
