Senators, Condon shut out Panthers

OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators scored two goals 19 seconds apart in the first period and received shutout goaltending from Mike Condon to defeat the Florida Panthers 2-0 at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.

It was the second shutout of the season in six games played for Condon, who made 24 saves.

Defenseman Erik Karlsson and center Derick Brassard provided all the offense Ottawa needed.

The Panthers pulled goalie Roberto Luongo with three minutes to play, but still couldn't hit the board. Luongo made 18 saves.

Karlsson scored his fifth goal of the season to put the Senators on the board first at the 6:46 mark of the opening period. Karlsson, positioned at the edge of the crease to Luongo's left, took a pass from behind the net by Ryan Dzingel, kicked it back to his stick and banged a shot to the back of the net.

Brassard made it 2-0 at 7:05, taking a pass from Chris Wideman in the same area and kicking it to his stick then beating Luongo for his fourth of the season.

The Senators outshot the Panthers 9-5 in the first period. Florida turned the tables and held a 13-7 advantage in the second.

NOTES: Senators D Andreas Englund played his first NHL game with Ds Marc Methot and Fredrik Claesson sidelined by injuries. Englund, a 20-year-old from Stockholm, Sweden, was Ottawa's first pick (40th overall) in the 2014 entry draft. ... Senators RW Buddy Robinson was also recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League. He played his fourth NHL game and first this season. ... Panthers C Kyle Rau was scratched for the fourth time this season. He had played the previous three games. ... Panthers D Dylan McIlrath was scratched for the eighth time.
