Burrows shines in Senators debut
OTTAWA -- Newly acquired winger Alex Burrows scored twice in his debut as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday night.
Mike Hoffman assisted on both goals as the Senators improved to 34-22-6 and rebounded from an ugly 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Monday.
Rene Bourque scored the only goal on Senators netminder Craig Anderson, who stopped 22 shots for the win. Anderson is 5-2 in seven starts since returning from a two-month absence to be with his wife, who is battling cancer.
Calvin Pickard stopped 40 shots for the Avalanche (17-42-3), who are 2-9-1 in their last 12 games.
Bourque spoiled Anderson's bid for a shutout at 5:25 of the third period when he gathered a bouncing puck in the slot and whipped it over the goalie's glove.
Burrows opened the scoring with his first shot as a Senator at 8:39 of the opening period, taking a cross-ice pass from Hoffman and beating Pickard with a shot from the left wing face-off circle.
From the corner, Hoffman found Burrows in the high slot for a shot that beat Pickard at 15:41 for the only goal of the second period.
It was Burrows' 21st career two-goal game and first since Nov. 8 against the New York Rangers.
Through 40 minutes, the Senators held a 30-15 shot advantage.
