Atkinson's OT goal caps wild win for Jackets in Ottawa
OTTAWA -- Cam Atkinson's second goal of the game 1:09 into overtime gave the Columbus Blue Jackets a wild 7-6 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Place on Sunday.
Atkinson ended the game when given a clear breakaway after Erik Karlsson shot wide while streaking down the right wing. The goal was Atkinson's 23 of the season.
Nick Foligno, Scott Harrington, Zach Werenski, Lukas Sedlak, Matt Calvert also scored for Columbus.
Alexander Wennberg had three assists.
Zack Smith scored twice and added an assist for the Senators, while Mike Hoffman also notched a pair of goals and Mark Stone and Kyle Turris had the others.
Making his 22nd consecutive appearance and 13th straight start, Mike Condon stopped 22 shots.
Joonas Korpisalo made 28 saves in the Blue Jackets net.
Werenski left the game with 13:13 to go in the third period when he was struck on the inside of the right foot by an Erik Karlsson point shot, but he did return.
Atkinson's first goal at 10:50 of the third, gave the Blue Jackets a 6-5 lead. His shot from the slot was deflected, sending the puck floating through the air. Senators defenseman Marc Methot waved at it, and Condon missed it when he tried to make the catch.
Turris tied the score against at 12:39, just 10 seconds into a power play, when his point shot trickled past Korpisalo. It was his 17th of the season.
Sedlak pulled the Blue Jackets to within one at 1:50 of the third when he was sent in by a smooth neutral zone pass from Scott Hartnell, then put a nice deke on Condon for his sixth of the season.
Calvert tied the score 31 second later when he deflected a Seth Jones point shot for his sixth.
Ottawa led 5-3 after two periods.
The Senators struck first at the 42 second mark on a play started by Stone's league leading 61st takeaway in the neutral zone. A point shot by Cody Ceci went wide, but Smith was there to pick the rebound off the net and jam it in the side.
Foligno tied the game just 34 seconds later, with Ceci in the box for hooking. Marc Methot's clearing attempt up the boards was blocked by Alexander Weinberg, who broke toward the net then pass it cross crease to Foligno for the tap in. It was his 16th of the season.
Smith notched his second at the 5:33 mark, situated in the high slot while redirecting a point shot by Ceci for his 11th of the season. Also drawing an assist was Curtis Lazar, who picked up his first point in his 25th game of the season.
Harrington scored his first NHL goal, in his 31st game, when his wrist shot from the point when past a crowd and beat Condon low on the short side at 10:18 of the period.
Werenski's power-play goal at 56 seconds of the second period put the Blue Jackets in front 3-2, giving them their first lead of the day.
Werenski was in the right place at the right time to collect his seventh of the season, as a Jones' point shot hit a body in front and ricocheted right to him for a shot with Condon out of position.
Hoffman was in the box at the time, and he made up for it by scoring his 16th of the season at 10:42 of the period, benefitting by the hard work of Jean-Gabriel Pageau along the boards to fire a high shot past Korpisalo from the top of the left-wing circle.
Stone gave Ottawa a 4-3 lead at the 13:08 mark, firing a rebound into an open side after Derick Brassard's shot off a 2-on-1 rebound right to his stick. Stone's goal was his 16th.
Hoffman padded the cushion when he notched his second of the period, again after some diligent work by Pageau along the boards, with a low shot from the right-wing circle and 16.8 second left on the clock.
