Condon masterful as Senators snap Caps' point streak
OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators cooled off the NHL's hottest team when they shut down the Washington Capitals 3-0 at Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday night.
It was the Capitals' first regulation loss since Dec. 27, stopping their bid at tying a franchise record by picking up points in 15 consecutive games.
Mike Condon made 31 saves to pick up his fourth shutout this season while improving his record to 14-7-4.
Chris Kelly, Bobby Ryan and Zack Smith each had a goal for the Senators.
Philipp Grubauer stopped 31 shots for Washington.
The Senators held a 2-0 lead after one period and increased it to 3-0 through 40 minutes.
Kelly opened the scoring with a short-handed effort 1:46 after the opening draw, taking a soft pass from Tom Pyatt to the front of the net and backhanding into the bottom corner. It was his third goal of the season.
Ryan scored his fourth goal in the last seven games and his 11 of the season when he deflected a point shot by Fredrik Claesson at 4:10.
Smith redirected a pass from Ryan Dzingel on the power play at 11:57 of the second to pad the lead. It was Smith's 12th of the season and third in two games.
The Senators held a 10-9 lead in shots after one and were up 23-22 at the second intermission.
NOTES: Senators LW Mike Hoffman missed the game with an illness. Hoffman, who was tied for the team lead in goals with 17, scored seven times in his last seven contests. ... Ottawa C Casey Bailey was recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League on Tuesday to replace Hoffman in the lineup. It was his fifth NHL game of the season ... The Senators scratched D Mark Borowiecki (flu) for the fourth game and C Tommy Wingels, who was acquired in a trade with San Jose earlier in the day. ... Capitals C Jay Beagle missed his first game of the season with an illness. Replacing him in the lineup was C Chandler Stephenson, who was recalled from Hershey of the AHL to play his first NHL game of the season and 10th career. ... Washington G Philipp Grubauer entered the night with a 7-0-2 record since his last regulation time loss, Nov. 12 against Carolina. ... Capitals D John Carlson missed his fifth game with a lower-body injury.
