NEW YORK -- J.T. Brown and Ryan Callahan scored during a 42-second span late in the first period on Monday night and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all 34 shots he faced as the Tampa Bay Lightning completed a dominant season sweep of the New York Islanders with a 4-0 win at Barclays Center.

Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestinikov scored in the second period for the Lightning (9-6-1), who have alternated wins with losses in their last seven games (4-2-1).

But the Lightning had no such consistency issues against the Islanders, whom it has beaten seven straight times dating to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last spring.

The Lightning outscored the Islanders 14-2 in sweeping the three-game season series. All three games were played this month. It is the fourth time Tampa Bay has swept the season series and the second time it has not allowed the Islanders to earn a point (1995).

The Islanders (5-8-3) have lost three straight (0-2-1) and six of seven (1-3-3). New York began Monday with the second-fewest points in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Goalie Jaroslav Halak recorded 27 saves.

The Lightning removed most of the suspense by scoring twice in the final 62 seconds of the first period.

J.T. Brown, with a step on Josh Bailey, took a pass in stride from Cedric Paquette and beat Jaroslav Halak on a semi-breakaway. That goal had just been announced when Ryan Callahan, stationed in front of the net, redirected a shot by Andrej Sustr with just under 20 seconds remaining.

The Lightning nearly made it 3-0, but a shot by Kucherov in the final 10 seconds bounced off a post and skittered along the goal line before exiting the goalmouth.

The Islanders killed off three penalties in the second period, including a four-minute double minor assessed to Jason Chimera in the opening minute, before Steven Stamkos helped set up two goals in a span of under three minutes late in the third period.

First, Kucherov exchanged the puck with Stamkos before the latter's final pass hit Kucherov, who was all alone to the right of the net and poked the puck home as Halak was stuck leaning to his left at 14:24.

Stamkos picked up his second assist when he bore down on the net and lingered with his stick on the puck until he got midway through the right faceoff circle. Stamkos fired a pass across the ice to Vladislav Namestinikov, who also caught Halak leaning the other way with 2:58 remaining.

NOTES: Islanders D Travis Hamonic returned to the lineup after missing just three games with a broken thumb. Hamonic was expected to miss four to six weeks after suffering the injury on Nov. 5 but said he felt fine while working out last week and he could carry the puck as usual. ... Hamonic's return came two days after D Dennis Seidenberg (broken jaw) was lost indefinitely. To replace Seidenberg, the Islanders recalled D Scott Mayfield from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League. ... The Islanders scratched G Jean-Francois Berube, C Shane Prince and C Alan Quine. The Lightning scratched D Anton Stralman (upper body injury) as well as D Luke Witkowski, the latter of whom was recalled from Syracuse earlier Monday. ... The Lightning began a five-game road trip -- their second of three trips this season lasting at least five games.
