Sabres 3, Canadiens 2 (SO)
Thomas Vanek and Brad Boyes had shootout goals and Jhonas Enroth made 25 saves in relief of injured starter Ryan Miller as the Buffalo Sabres rallied for a 3-2 win over the host Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.
Boyes gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead in the sudden-death format after Vanek and Montreal's Max Pacioretty traded goals. Canadiens captain Brian Gionta had a chance to extend the shootout but he was denied by Enroth, who improved to 6-0-0 on the season.
Trailing 2-0 following an uninspired 40 minutes of play, Jason Pominville put Buffalo on the board in the opening minute of the third period, finding open space in the slot before blasting a one-timer past Montreal goalie Carey Price.
Derek Roy drew the Sabres even with 7:30 remaining, capping sustained pressure by gathering a pass from Vanek and flipping the puck past Price.
The teams played more than 33 minutes of scoreless hockey in regulation before Erik Cole put Montreal on the board, rifling a slapshot past Enroth with the Canadiens enjoying a power play.
Pacioretty extended the advantage just over 10 minutes later, batting home a knuckler for his team-leading eighth goal of the campaign.
