Oilers 4, Avalanche 1

Sam Gagner scored two goals to spark the slumping Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

Ben Eager and Jordan Eberle added goals and star rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a pair of assists as the Oilers won for only the second time in seven games.

Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 28 shots to send Colorado to its third straight loss overall and eight consecutive defeat on the road.

Gagner jump-started the Oilers with a power-play goal at 6:07 of the first period, stealing the puck in the corner and veering in along the goal line before shoveling a shot past Semyon Varlamov.

His second tally – a one-timer on a pass from Nugent-Hopkins with only three seconds left in the second period – made it 4-1 and was Gagner's third goal in three games after failing to score in his first 19.

Eager had his second tally in as many games after opening the season with a 16-game goalless drought and Eberle netted his fourth goal during his current six-game point streak.

Jay McClement had the only goal for Colorado, which was 6-0-0 on the road on Oct. 22 and hasn’t won away from home since.
