Hurricanes 2, Jets 1
Jeff Skinner scored for the second straight game and Cam Ward turned aside 29 shots as the Carolina Hurricanes skated to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Monday.
Tim Brent also tallied for Carolina, which improved to 4-1-2 in its last seven games and defeated its Southeast Division rival for the first time in four tries this season.
Kyle Wellwood's one-timer from the slot put Winnipeg on the scoreboard midway through the second period, but Ward stopped all 14 shots in the third to improve to 7-2-1 in his last 10 starts versus the Jets/Thrashers franchise.
Winnipeg has lost eight of its last 10 contests, but sits only four points behind the first-place Florida Panthers.
Skinner opened the scoring 3:55 into the first period. The Calder Trophy winner skated up the wing and attempted to wrist a centering feed on a 2-on-1 rush, but the puck caromed off the skate of a Jets' defender. Skinner collected the puck and quickly wristed a shot past Chris Mason for his 14th goal of the season.
Brent doubled the advantage just over 5 1/2 minutes later after he jumped on a fortuitous bounce and backhanded the puck past Mason for his sixth of the season.
