Hurricanes 4, Jets 3
HURRICANES 4, JETS 3: Chad LaRose scored to snap a tie with 1:22 remaining in the third period as visiting Carolina prevented Winnipeg from pulling into a tie for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Captain Eric Staal tallied twice to secure his seventh straight season with at least 20 goals. Jussi Jokinen collected a goal and two assists and Cam Ward turned aside 30 shots for the Hurricanes, who have won three in a row.
Antti Miettinen snapped a career-worst 34-game goalless drought by tallying twice and Nik Antropov scored a goal for the third consecutive contest for the Jets, who remained two points behind Washington in the standings. The Capitals dropped a 5-2 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks earlier on Sunday.
With the score tied at 3-3, LaRose accepted a feed from Staal at center ice before skating in and beating Ondrej Pavelec for his 17th goal.
After Miettinen gave Winnipeg a 3-2 lead with 1:06 left in the second period after converting a give-and-go with Spencer Machacek, Staal leveled the contest midway through the third.
Jokinen forced a turnover and fed Staal, who beat Pavelec under the crossbar from the top of the faceoff circle.
