The lone American remaining in the Volvo World Match Play on the European Tour was bounced in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Patrick Reed lost to South African George Coetzee 2 & 1. The match was even through 11 holes with each man winning two holes on the front nine.
Coetzee took control with birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 to go 2-UP. Reed would answer with a birdie at No. 15, but Coetzee birdied No. 16 to regain the two-hole lead.
Both men made par on No. 17 to give Coetzee the win.
Victor Dubuisson, the runner-up at the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February, and Miko Ilonen battled through an exciting match in the second group out at the London Golf Club in Kent, England.
Dubuisson took the early lead with an eagle at the par-5 first hole, but Ilonen won No. 4 with a birdie to get back to even.
Dubuisson won No. 7, but his opponent bounced back with a win at No. 8, and the match was tied after the first nine holes.
Ilonen gained the advantage at No. 10 with a birdie, Dubuisson brought the match back to even with a birdie and a win at No. 11.
Ilonen once again went 1-UP when Dubuisson made bogey at the very next hole. Dubuisson made his second eagle of the round at No. 15, but made another bogey at the next to give the advantage back to Ilonen.
Both men made par at No. 17 and Dubuisson made a mess at the final hole and conceded Ilonen’s birdie for the 2-UP win.
Joost Luiten will be well rested for his semi-final match. He carded five birdies in his first seven holes to take a 5-UP lead over Pablo Larrazabal.
He added another birdie to go 6-UP at No. 11 and Larrazabal never won a hole on Saturday, losing after just 13 holes.
In the all-Swedish quarter-final match featuring Henrik Stenson and Jonas Blixt, Stenson took a 3-UP lead through 11 holes.
Blixt battled back to get within one with birdies at Nos. 14 and 15. Both men halved Nos. 16 and 17, and Stenson went to the 18th with a 1-UP lead.
Neither man found the par-5 green with their second shot. Blixt, playing first, left his chip from the deep rough woefully short. Stenson, with a much better angle and shorter shot, chipped to within five feet.
Blixt then missed his long birdie putt and conceded the 1-UP win to Stenson.
The semi-final matches will be held on Sunday morning with the 18-hole final following in the afternoon.
Luiten will play Ilonen in one match and Coetzee will challenge Stenson, the highest ranked player in the field this week.
