Matt Kuchar Closes the Deal and Wins at the Memorial

Matt Kuchar held the 54-hole lead in the last two consecutive PGA Tour events. Unlike last week at the Crowne Plaza at Colonial his four-under par 68 was good enough to win this week at the Memorial Tournament.

Kevin Chappel made a run on the back nine with four birdies over the last six holes, but ultimately came up two shots short of Kuchar, who played his plodding fairways and greens game to perfection.

Chappel has missed seven cuts this year, but his runner-up finish at the Memorial is his third top-10 of the year.

This is Kuchar’s second win of the year and his sixth top-10 finish in 14 events. He entered the week at No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings, but will jump over Brandt Snedeker for the second spot.

He is the only player other than Tiger Woods to have multiple wins this year.

Kuchar has been one of the most consistent golfers in the world over the past three years. He leads the tour with 35 top-10 finishes since the start of the 2010 season.

He was the model of consistency on the course hitting 13 fairways in the last round on Sunday.

Kyle Stanley had another good tournament and finished in third spot alone at seven-under par.

Scott Stallings and Bill Haas finished at six-under par and tied for fourth spot. Russell Henley, who won earlier in the year and Matt Jones were T-6.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were non-factors at the Memorial. Both struggled throughout the week at Muirfield Village. Woods’ front nine 44 in the third round on Saturday was his worst nine-hole score ever as a professional.

He could never get his game in gear and finished T-65 in the 73-man field. At least he will have a few things to work on over the next couple weeks prior to the U.S. Open.

McIlroy barely made the cut after a first round 78. He followed that with a second round 69 and made the cut on the number at three-over par. He shot 75-72 on the weekend and was T-57.

Kuchar has won the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play and was the 2012 Players Champion. His precise ball-striking ability and overall consistent style of play should fit nicely over the storied fairways at Merion for the U.S. Open in two weeks.

Will it be Matt Kuchar’s time to win a major championship?
