PGA Tour Rookie Charlie Beljan wins at Disney

PGA Tour rookie Charlie Beljan jumped from No. 139 on the tour money list to No. 63 with his win at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic held at Disney World.

Beljan won the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur and he had three collegiate wins as a member of the New Mexico golf team.

He has been playing on the Gateway Tour and earned his PGA Tour card in the 2011 PGA Q-School.

Beljan missed 11 cuts in 2012 but in his nine made cuts he had three top-10 finishes including a third at the Greenbrier Classic.

The win at Disney brought his earnings for the year to $1.3 million and secures his place on the PGA Tour for 2013.

This has been a banner year for Beljan.  In addition to the win he married and became a father.

Beljan had to overcome heart palpitations during Friday’s second round. He was even transported via ambulance to the hospital where he spent the night.

He literally jumped out of the hospital gurney Saturday morning and hit the first tee. He bogeyed two of the first three holes in his third round but steadied the ship and posted one-under par 71 to take the lead into the final round.

Charlie again struggled during the final round but his eight birdies offset three bogeys and a double-bogey to post a three-under par 69.

The win not only gives Beljan a two-year exemption but also jumps him inside the Top-70 on the money list which makes him eligible for the invitational events next year.
