The Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro finally got some good news from the court system and now appears to be on course for the games to be held in Brazil in 2016.
Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse and U.S. Senior Amateur Championship Medalist Alan Fadel were named Global Golf Post’s (GGP) Amateurs of the Year. Stackhouse has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open and Fadel is actively involved with The First Tee of Lake Erie, as well as, instrumental in initiating the Concession Cup.
GGP’s choice of a young African-American woman and a 60-year-old Caucasian man as their honorees demonstrates the opportunities available to diverse cultures and age groups within the game of golf.
The European Tour announced that the Senior Open would return to Royal Porthcawal in 2017. The British Masters is making a return to the European Tour schedule and will employ a rotating carousel of big name professional golfers as hosts. Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter will all lend their names to the tournament and take turns posing for the cameras.
Joe Cave is an aspiring golf professional that attended West Point and then served as an Army officer. After deployment to Iraq, the Army recognized his golfing talents and made him a member of the Army Golf Team. He has won numerous awards and is now back in civilian life is pursuing his dream of being a professional golfer.
An interview with Joe Louis Barrow, son of the World Champion boxer and CEO of The First Tee, talked about where The First Tee has been and where it is going. Currently serving 7 million young people around the world, their goal is to double that number over the next four years.
