Vijay Singh Makes Champions Tour Debut in Hawaii

Vijay Singh turned 50 years old earlier this year and will make his Champions Tour debut this week at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.

Singh has 34 career PGA Tour wins and has earned over $67 million. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.

Although he turned 50 back in February, he has chosen to play predominately on the PGA Tour. Singh was the center of media attention in April when it was announced he had taken deer antler spray, a banned substance.

Singh appealed the suspension issued by the tour and the PGA Tour eventually dropped the investigation when deer antler spray was removed from the banned substance list.

He missed seven cuts in 19 starts on the PGA Tour in 2013. He only earned $309,000, finished No. 146 in the FedEx Cup and has fallen to No. 179 in the world rankings.

It becomes very difficult to compete with the 20-somethings on the PGA Tour at age 50. It appears to be a much wiser move to consort with the old guys and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere on the golf course.

The field at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship includes all of the top competitors in the Charles Schwab Cup race, as well as, most of the Champions Tour winners.

Kenny Perry remains the Charles Schwab Cup leader with Bernhard Langer, David Frost, Duffy Waldorf and Fred Couples trying to catch him.

Willie Wood is the defending champions at the 7,000 yard, par-72, Kapolei Golf Course. The players will play 54 holes for a total purse of $1.8 million with $270,000 going to the winner.

The tournament can be seen on the Golf Channel beginning at 6:30 PM ET on both Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21.

Final round coverage will also be on the Golf Channel Sunday, September 22, 7:00-9:00 PM ET.
