World Golf Hall of Fame Announces New Induction Process

The World Golf Hall of Fame Board of Directors announced changes in criteria and selection for future inductees.

A 20-member panel will nominate worthy candidates and a 16-member selection committee will make the final decisions. The selection committee will include four Hall of Fame members. Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez are on the selection committee for 2015 and it will also be comprised of three golf writers with the remaining spots filled by golf administrators.

There was a minor revolt involving World Golf Hall of Fame criteria, after Fred Couples was picked for the 2013 class. Even though Couples had 15 career PGA Tour wins, donned the Green Jacket at the 1992 Masters and was a member of five Ryder Cup and seven President Cup teams, some golf purists questioned his induction into the revered hall.

No one will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year and the new process will begin with the 2015 class.

For consideration Hall of Fame prospects must now have a minimum of 15 wins on a major tour or two major titles on their resume.

This will standardize the criteria across all tours. Currently the LPGA requires a points system that made it very difficult for women to gain entry. European or International players that may have been overlooked in the past should be able to gain entry into the Hall of Fame.

Inductees will be chosen from four categories, Men, Women, Veterans and Lifetime Achievement.

The addition of Hall of Fame members to the selection process and the standardization of entrance criteria should increase the prestige and add even more meaning to induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
