Newcomb helps Braves double up Nationals

Left-hander Sean Newcomb pitched seven strong innings and drove in a run, as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Thursday at SunTrust Park.

Newcomb (6-1) bounced back from a poor outing against Boston in his last start and defeated the Nationals for the first time in three career starts. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. Newcomb struck out two and lowered his ERA to 2.73.

Dan Winkler pitched a scoreless eighth. Arodys Vizcaino pitched around a double and struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 10th save in 12 tries.

The win in the first game of the four-game series enabled the Braves to regain first place in the N.L. East, a half-game ahead of Washington, which saw its six-game winning streak snapped.

The losing pitcher was Tanner Roark (2-5), who gave up four runs in 6 2/3 innings on seven hits and five walks. He struck out three and fell to 7-4 in his career against the Braves.

The Atlanta offense was sparked by the top-of-the-order duo of center fielder Ender Inciarte and second baseman Ozzie Albies, who each had two hits and scored a run.

Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Shortstop Trea Turner scored both runs for the Nationals.

The Nationals scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Rendon.

The Braves took the lead by scoring twice in the second inning. Preston Tucker doubled in Nick Markakis and Newcomb brought home Tyler Flowers on a fielder's choice.

The Nationals tied the game in the third on Rendon's RBI single, but the Braves regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Freddie Freeman's double when right fielder Bryce Harper committed a throwing error, bringing home Albies.

Atlanta added a run in the seventh on a double by Albies, but the Nats avoided a big inning when rookie Wander Suero struck out Flowers with the bases loaded to prevent a big inning.
