Josi helps Predators win seventh straight over Avs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Predators captain Roman Josi, in his return to the ice Tuesday night, scored the go-ahead goal and added an assist in Nashville's 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Bridgestone Arena.
Josi, who missed the previous three games with a lower-body injury sustained Oct. 7 in Pittsburgh, knocked home a rebound at the right post for a 2-1 Nashville lead at 13:30 of the second period. The goal came during a five-on-three power play with Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog in the box.
Josi then tacked on a secondary assist to Colton Sissons' first goal of the season at 19:15 of the second. Craig Smith teed up Sissons with a nice pass from the left boards, and Sissons slipped a backhander through the legs of goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
Austin Watson sealed the verdict at 4:08 of the third period with his first goal, slamming home the rebound of Alexei Emelin's slapper into a half-empty net from the right circle.
Pekka Rinne (3-1-1) was solid for a third straight game, stopping 20 shots. Rinne has allowed only four goals in that stretch.
It was the Predators' seventh consecutive win over Colorado (4-3-0), dating back to April 2016. In upping its record to 3-2-1, Nashville earned a point for the fourth straight game.
Varlamov made 30 saves for the Avalanche, who have dropped two in a row.
After carving out a slight territorial edge in a scoreless first period, Colorado grabbed a 1-0 lead on the power play at 4:09 of the second period. Center Nathan MacKinnon's centering pass from atop the left circle hit Josi's skate and skittered past Rinne for MacKinnon's first goal.
The Predators needed only 2:58 to formulate a tying response. A failed pinch by defenseman Erik Johnson on Emelin's pass out of the defensive zone presented Nashville with a four-on-one. Viktor Arvidsson took Filip Forsberg's setup in the slot and beat Varlamov with a backhander for his third goal.
