Penguins 6, Maple Leafs 5 (SO)
Alex Kovalev scored in the second round of the shootout and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all three attempts as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated to a wild 6-5 road triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Rookie Mark Letestu recorded a goal and an assist, Michael Rupp and Dustin Jeffrey also tallied and Max Talbot netted a shorthanded goal for Pittsburgh (37-21-6), which scored as many goals on Saturday as it did collectively during its four-game losing skid.
Acquired in a deal with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, Kovalev also netted his first goal during his second stint with the Penguins.
After the 38-year-old Russian scored in the shootout, Fleury denied Mikhail Grabovski to seal the win. The 26-year-old Quebec native, who denied Joffrey Lupul and All-Star Phil Kessel in the earlier rounds, finished with 26 saves to improve to 28-16-4 on the campaign.
Lupul tallied twice and former Penguin Colby Armstrong, Clarke MacArthur and defenseman Dion Phaneuf also scored for Toronto (27-27-8), which suffered its fifth loss in 13 games (8-2-3).
Kessel notched a pair of assists and rookie James Reimer turned aside 35 shots to fall to 10-4-3 on the season.
