Bruins 4, Lightning 1
Rich Peverley scored twice and Tim Thomas made 25 saves as the Boston Bruins defeated the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 on Saturday night.
Peverley scored the first goal of the game, knocking home the rebound of Brad Marchand’s shot that hit both posts 2:04 into the second period. The winger added his second with 11:27 left for a 4-1 lead in the rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference final.
The Lightning have won just four of 36 regular-season games in Boston.
Tampa Bay’s Marty St. Louis scored his 300th career goal on a breakaway in the second period to tie the game 1-1, converting against his former University of Vermont teammate Thomas.
Daniel Paille’s deflection at 4:58 of the second gave Boston a 2-1 lead and Thomas kept it that way with a big stop on Teddy Purcell early in the third period.
Mathieu Garon, who came into the game with a 3-1 record against the Bruins, had 28 saves in the first two periods to keep the Lightning in it.
Marchand and Tyler Seguin each had two assists for the Bruins. Seguin has three in the first two games.
