Hurricanes 4, Sabres 3

Reigning Calder Trophy winner Jeff Skinner scored a power-play goal to snap a tie with 1:24 remaining in the third period as the Carolina Hurricanes skated to a 4-3 road triumph over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

Brandon Sutter and Tim Brent netted shorthanded goals and Cam Ward turned aside 39 shots for Carolina, which killed off all seven power plays to win the first contest of its four-game road trip.

After Drew Stafford leveled the score at 3-3 with 2:21 remaining in the third period, Buffalo’s Thomas Vanek was whistled for a tripping penalty.

Skinner made the Sabres just 36 seconds later by one-timing a shot which caromed off Ryan Miller's pad and into the net for his second goal of the season.

Vanek scored for his 22nd point in 23 career games versus the Hurricanes. Derek Roy scored for the first time since Dec. 17, but Buffalo was unable to overcome its woeful play on special teams.

Miller finished with 30 saves for Buffalo, which was bidding to win its first three games of the season for the first time since 2008-09.
