Capitals 5, Hurricanes 1
Michal Neuvirth made 24 saves in his second start of the season and Troy Brouwer scored his third goal as the visiting Washington Capitals dominated the last two periods en route to a 5-1 victory over the Carlona Hurricanes on Friday.
Jeff Halpern and John Carlson scored their first goal of the season, rookie Cody Eakin netted his first of his career and Nicklas Backstrom added his fifth tally in a two-point night for the Capitals.
Alex Ovechkin, who was left on the bench in the final minute of regulation on Tuesday, bounced back with a pair of assists in 21 shifts.
The Hurricanes actually held a lead at one point, grabbing the first goal when Anthony Stewart beat Neuvirth early in the first period.
Washington made it look easy after that, tying it on Halpern’s tally at the 1:28 mark of the second and taking the lead just over a minute later. Brouwer accepted a feed from Marcus Johansson on the break and knocked it over Cam Ward’s shoulder.
Carlson scored on the power-play in the third, blasting a slap shot from the above the left face-off circle.
Ward made 27 saves for Carolina.
