Maple Leafs 2, Hurricanes 1 (OT)
Tim Connolly's second goal of the game 44 seconds into overtime lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Joffrey Lupul's slapshot from the top of the left circle hit Carolina netminder Cam Ward and trickled behind him. The loose puck found its way to Connolly, who directed it into an empty net to cap a night in which Toronto dominated play but needed extra time to record only its second win in the last six games.
The Maple Leafs finally opening the scoring at 15:46 of the third period. Clarke Macarthur's shot from just inside the blue line was deflected by Connolly low past Ward.
Alexei Ponikarovsky evened things on a power play with only 1:54 remaining, one-timing an Eric Staal pass from the front edge of the crease past Toronto goalie James Reimer.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Maple Leafs outshoot the Hurricanes 13-5, Toronto carried the play again in the second frame but couldn't beat Ward. Carolina had few scoring chances over the same span, managing only 12 shots through the opening 40 minutes.
