Jets 4, Canadiens 0

Blake Wheeler scored twice and Ondrej Pavelec made 27 saves as the Winnipeg Jets routed visiting Montreal 4-0 on Thursday, handing the Canadiens their fifth consecutive loss.

Wheeler also had an assist in his first two-goal game of the season to drop Montreal to 0-4-0 under new head coach Randy Cunneyworth. The Canadiens have surrendered 21 goals during their losing skid.

It was the third shutout of the season for Pavelec, and the ninth of his career.

Winnipeg dominated the first period, outshooting Montreal 13-6, and was rewarded with a 2-0 advantage.

Wheeler opened the scoring at 3:18 by tapping home a cross-ice feed from Dustin Byfuglien with the Jets enjoying a power play. Tanner Glass extended the advantage just under 10 minutes later with a conversion of a Nik Antropov pass.

Wheeler made it 3-0 just 39 seconds into the second period, streaking down the right wing and firing a shot that beat Canadiens netminder Carey Price.

Pavelec held things down from there, making several point-blank saves as the Canadiens failed to capitalize on four second-period power-plays – including a four-minute double-minor after Chris Thorburn high-sticked Montreal rookie Alexei Emelin.

Tim Stapleton rounded out the scoring with 2:24 remaining, notching his fourth of the season.
