Coyotes 6, Avalanche 1

Shane Doan recorded his 40th career two-goal game and Boyd Gordon notched his first multi-goal effort as the Phoenix Coyotes snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

Defensemen Keith Yandle and Chris Summers and forward Ryan Whitney chipped in with two assists each for the Coyotes, who improved to 9-8-3 at home. The assists were the first two career points for Summers.

The Coyotes’ six goals were a season high. Goalie Mike Smith, 2-0-3 in his last five, made 38 saves.

Phoenix, which came into the game last in the NHL on the power play, opened the scoring with the man advantage. Gilbert Brule, playing his third game with the Coyotes after being claimed on re-entry waivers, hammered home a slap shot at 7:18 of the first period.

Chuck Kobasew’s deflection tied the game at 9:36, but Doan took a nifty pass from Yandle up the middle for a breakaway goal with 1:28 left in the opening period.

Doan deflected a shot by Summers past Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov 10:54 into the second and Gordon extended the lead to 4-1 at 16:37 with his first goal since Nov. 12.

Phoenix has won seven of the last nine against Colorado, including two of three this season.
