Islanders 2, Hurricanes 1 (OT)

John Tavares scored two goals – including the winner 3:58 into overtime – and Evgeni Nabokov made 32 saves as the New York Islanders won their third straight game by defeating the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Saturday.

In overtime, Tavares was initially stopped by Cam Ward, but the All-Star was able to bat his own rebound out of the air past the helpless netminder to end the contest.

Tavares tied the game at 1-1 at 7:46 of the second period when he cleaned up the rebound off a point shot. On the play, Tavares extended his point streak to 12 games – the longest in the NHL this season.

Jeff Skinner scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes in the first period. The reigning Calder Trophy winner kicked a rebound from his skate to his stick, went to his backhand and slid the puck past Nabokov for his 13th goal of the season.

Ward finished with 38 saves for Carolina.
