Devils 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

NEWARK, N.J. -- Right winger Kyle Palmeri scored on a breakaway with 39.3 seconds left in overtime to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night at the Prudential Center.

Power play goals by right winger Gustav Nyquist and left winger Tomas Tatar in the second period gave the Red Wings a two-goal advantage, but the Devils rallied to tie on third-period goals by defenseman Damon Severson and center Sergey Kalinin.

Palmeri ended the come-from-behind win when he beat Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard high with a backhand for his 13th goal of the season.

The Devils (15-10-4), who are 5-1 in overtime games, have points in each of their last five games.

The Red Wings (16-8-5) now have points in 13 consecutive games, their longest streak since a 20-game run in 2010. Detroit, which is second in the Atlantic Division, hasn't lost in regulation since Nov. 14.

The Red Wings needed just 11 seconds of their second power play to score the first goal at 8:51 of the second period when Nyquist deflected a point shot by left winger Henrik Zetterberg off the near post for his 11th goal of the season and fifth on the power play. Defenseman Niklas Kronwell also assisted on the goal.

The Red Wings cashed in on their next power play as Tatar scored his 11th goal of the season on a snap shot after a toe-drag from the top of the left circle at 16:08 of the second period.

Defensemen Brad Richards and Mike Green assisted on Tatar's fifth power play goal of the year, which he put high blocker on Devils goaltender Cory Schneider (27 saves). Red Wings center Dylan Larkin hit the post on the same power play.

Tatar's goal came immediately after Howard (35 saves) robbed Devils left winger Mike Cammalleri with a pad save of his low backhand. Cammalleri was also denied twice late in the second period by Howard for two of his 26 saves through the first 40 minutes.

The Devils solved Howard 2:40 into the third period when Severson snuck a slap shot from the right point through a screen in front for his first goal of the season.

The Devils tied the score at 2 on a power play goal by Kalinin, who tipped in a slap shot by Palmeri for his third goal of the season. Detroit coach Jeff Blashill challenged, believing Kalinin interfered with Howard, but the goal was upheld.
